Bordesley Village Primary School

A place for every one.

Welcome to Year One Autumn 2017!

We hope you’ve had an enjoyable start to the year!
We have all enjoyed getting used to our lovely new classrooms, we have new tables and chairs and lots of fantastic displays to help us with our learning.
This year in year one we will continue to progress through the Read Write Inc program.

Read Write Inc helps us learn how to read and write by teaching us all of the sounds within the English language. This year children will learn alternative spellings for these sounds and will therefore be able to read even more words! We will carry on learning our Red words. We will all be starting to read more of the exciting story books linked to the Read Write Inc. programme.

Repeated readings of the texts supports children’s increasingly fluent decoding. A thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion help teachers ensure that children understand what they are reading.
Our class text this half term is ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

This term in Year One we will be learning about Our Local Area and the Changing Seasons. We will be taking a trip to Cannon Hill Park to look at different parts of our local area and observe how the plants have changed through the seasons.

In Maths this half term we will be thinking about calculation. We will be practising our calculation skills through our fluency activities and then showing our understanding of the process through our problem solving and reasoning questions. Our Maths lessons are fun and hands on! Counting up and down using a number line that we drew on the playground. Ordering numbers from smallest to greatest using Numicon.
